A Homecoming for the Soul

A Homecoming for the Soul

Fulton Sheen once said, "There are two ways of knowing how good and loving God is: one is by never losing Him through the preservation of innocence, and the other is by finding Him again after we have lost Him." This always reminds me how profoundly grateful I am for the Sacrament of Confession. Like many of us, I have moments when I feel distant from God, times when I need to rediscover His presence in my life and realign myself with His will. Confession is that beautiful pathway back to Him—a homecoming of the soul.

One of the tools that has helped me greatly in this journey is my own use of the Examination Journal.

Making a nightly examination of conscience is a powerful form of prayer in its own right. It invites us to reflect on our day, recognize our failings, and thank God for His blessings. But when used in the context of preparing for Confession, it becomes an even greater blessing. With the Examination Journal, you have a written record of your daily spiritual journey. This can make your Confession much more fruitful.

The more thoughtfully you examine your conscience, the better prepared you are when you step into the confessional. You begin to see patterns in your weaknesses, areas where you consistently fall short, and you can bring these to the priest with greater clarity. It’s like presenting a spiritual roadmap—not only for your healing but for the priest to offer deeper, more personal counsel. It becomes a collaborative effort with God's grace at the center.

If it's been a while since your last Confession, I invite you to return. God’s mercy is always waiting for you. The Sacrament is a gift—a profound opportunity to be restored and renewed in His love.
